I was not sure whether to post this in the wanted section or not, I am hoping to get some more traffic by posting in the newbies forum (especially as this is what the topic is geared towards) but if it needs to be moved then mods feel free to do so.

I am in the middle of fishless cycling my 55G right now, and its slow progress so far, last night I was wondering of ways that I could get the cycle to speed up some and thought about seeding with good bacteria from an established tank. Now, I know that I could get some from the LFS, but to be honest we all know that a lot of LFS are an unknown quantity when it comes to diseases etc (I personally don't know that I would want to get anything from my LFS for my tank).

So, where else can I get some good bacteria from? whether it be an old filter, a cup of gravel etc. I don't know anyone with an aquarium, so that leads me onto Aquaria Central. Now there are 81,000+ members on this site, and chances are that there is a member with an established tank located near me. What I propose is that there be some way for newcomers to the hobby have a thread somewhere that they can post a location and request some material from another user with an established (and healthy) tank. I see this being beneficial as the new person to the hobby can get maybe get their tank cycled that bit faster than starting with 0 bacteria, this in turn would help more people to choose the option of fishless cycling as it would already have a boost of bacteria to help (and aid in people not having to look at an empty tank for so long).

Anyways, hopefully that makes sense. I am interested to know what others think of this idea, and if anyone is in VA and wants to donate some bacteria please let me know, Thanks.

Thanks for reading.

Have you thought about adding bio-spira? I think in your other thead you said you tried this already?

you could try the wanted section of the classifieds down under general chit-chat.

I did think about putting something in the wanted section, but thought I would post here to see if it might be something that could take off with other members and possibly become a sticky type post.

Sounds like a good idea to me.... Like you said you never really know how close someone might be to you until you ask.... I know if someone needed some media to help a cycle out and I was pretty close I wouldnt mind giving some if I had it

I would be glad to help at as well provided I was close enough. I remember how frustrating it was as a newbie.
