I have been reading these threads in here for a while now and all of you guys seem smart and nice so i just want to say thanks already.

Ok hears my question. My old 25 gallon tank has been sitting in my room for about a month now. It has a centimetre or so above the gravel line. Would the bacteria have been able to survive well on the gravell? There is old fish waste in the gravell aswell so that could be a source of Ammonia for them. My friend is buying the tank and he wants to put fish in as soon as possible.

Some possibly might, but the vast majority of the bacteria still alive won't be the nitrifying bacteria.

Maybe enough to support 1 neon tetra or so.
 
The bacteria in your gravel may not be alive, but I see you've got a 72g tank... could you give your friend some of your filter media to jump start his filter? Just a thought :)
 
Like previous people have said, the chances of the nitrifying bacteria still surviving is very low.

As per Blinky's idea, that would be a good idea to help speed up the cycle.

I have a packet of ammo-rid in my aquaclear 300. Would that be helpfull for the bacteria? I dont want to give up my foam because i really need it for my oscar.

What is the ammo-rid for? Is this tank still cycling? If not, you really have no need for such a product. I wouldn't use it for good bacteria, but then again if the tank is still cycling then it is fighting for good bacteria too. :confused:
 
my tank is just about done cycling now and i dont have much use for it now. Does the ammo-rid have bacteria colonized on it because i know most things in the aquarium will.
