Bad Bad Bad mithrax crab

Today as I wake up, I turn on the lights on the 55g to see one of my mithrax crabs pinced on to a dead b/g chromis, This is a sad day for me, since I just got my chromis yesturday and was reallllly impressed with the quality of them, they are great... I only have 4 now :( gotta order another one when I place my next order...


Anything made for the crabs to keep them full all the time so they dont eat my fish, or do they just feed off of the stuff on the rock?

I doubt the mithrax crab killed the fish. More likely, the chromis died from other causes and the crab is just cleaning up. I have mithrax in with several very small, slow fish, and have never lost one to the crab.
 
I agree. Mithrax crabs are so slow, it seems really unlikely that one could have caught a fish. Since the fish are new, I'd bet that one just died and the crab was scavenging.
 
hmm, I dunno.. I have seeb them clip my damsel, but just barely and it'd would take a sec, then the damsel got away, so when the lights are off and the fish are sleeping, i their rock's, the crabs come out and get them.. There has'nt been any other deaths.
 
Mithrax crabs are detrivores--they eat algae, uneaten bits of food, and dead things. Mithrax are not good at catching and killing fish, especially something as speedy as members of the damsel family.

It could be a mis-identified mithrax, the fish could have died of other causes, or a hitch hiker crab of a different sort killed it and the mithrax was just cleaning up. Sorry, but I've had mithrax in with many different fish, some very small and some ailing fish, and the mithrax never touched them. Could it happen? Yes, but I think it's highly unlikely.
 
Orion, But I think it did happen, because before it's death these fish where so beautiful, and so very active, all 5 of them... and then I wake up and one's dead, the other four swimming beautifully and a mithrax was pinched onto one, so IMO it did happen.


Simply because the fish showed no signs of being sick, and everyone else in the tank seem fine.

the fish died and the crab ate it

if you added 5 fish yesterday there is a very good chance it died from moving stress, ammonia spike or improper acclimation

mithrax will not kill and eat your fish, like everyone else has said
