Yeah I'm pretty sure I do have Balloon Rams not GBRs. Are they a GBR cross or are they a seperate species? Here's a couple better pics. I think I have a male and a female. The top two pics I think are the Male. The lower two I'm pretty positive are the Female. Do all balloon Rams male and female have the blue coloring over the black spot? I'm having trouble finding info on Balloon Rams, are there needs and adult size similar to the GBR?

Reddog, they're still the same as the original blue ram except these were selectively bred to achieve such form I believe. Some people would consider it rather deformed as the scenario is similar to balloon mollies.

Nice fishes, baloon or not. The shape is different but me like it.
They look happy and healthy in that nice tank.

PS: I consider a little scary those goldfih with bubbles on their eyes .... ugghhhh.

You'll find everything you need to know about these fish by searching for info regarding blue rams... balloon are the same species but selective breeding has isolated the genes responsible for the malformed swim bladder which give them their appearance.

Any breeding program which reduces the fecundity of the species should be regarded as anathema by dedicated aquariasts. Most people who buy these kinds of fish don't realize what they are doing, just as most people who buy painted/dyed fish don't realize what they are supporting. But I suppose the same thing can be said about purchasing fish from Southeast Asian fish farms in general. Overbreeding/inbreeding have greatly contributed to declining health in many fish species now.

What we need are strong local aquarium clubs and members with good breeding programs to supply healthy fish to our local fish stores... I'll get off my soap box and go back to coffee. Balloon rams, balloon mollies, dyed fish make me :mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2:

I agree with Cathy's points and your's to keep the thread positive.... it's just a bit scary to see you saying that with six hundred and sixty six posts though...

Please post somewhere soon! :grinyes:

I was given some Balloon's. I have had them a year and find them to be interesting and fairly hardy fish. Are they defects or just selectivly bred? I think relating them to dyed fish is extreme. After all, how many varities of aquatic plants, inverts, and fish would be non-existant without selective/cross breeding?

Reddog, I too have had the hardest time trying to get decent sexing info...And your fish are pretty to me!

Yeah I bought them thinking they were GBRs. They were pretty small and I didn't notice the short body. I'm gonna keep them as I have taken an interest in them. They are cool little fish. I have found a site on these rams now...http://www.geocities.com/yutaka_loo/

I have never bought any dyed fish, nor would I ever.
