I use to have a bamboo shrimp that came out all the time and stood in front of the glass all the time. He was a pleasure to watch but sadly he died about two weeks ago.

I went out and found a replacement bamboo shrimp but this one isn't as active as the other one. I was wondering if it could be something that is wrong with the shrimp that is causing it to be "shy". Is it just personality or is it that the shrimp isn't happy?

My water readings:

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
pH 7.8

About a week. I just noticed the difference between the first shrimp and the second one. Completely different. I was just wondering if there was anything that I could have been doing wrong.

Did a new water test:
Ammo 0
Rites 0
Rates ~7
pH ~7.8

Bamboo shrimp just sit there eating in the current. Personally, I find this very entertaining because if you look closely you can see their mouth-parts moving like crazy. But maybe I'm just easily amused.

The most activity I see in them is when one pushes another out of the way, while they fight over the best spot to eat.

Many other types of shrimp are more active, but these ones are my personal favorite (so far, at least).

However, I would say give him another week or so to settle in better. Make sure there's something for him to cling to just below the filter output. 9 times out of 10, that is where my bamboos hang out, and then he should at least be visible to you, despite the lack of "activity".

I've also found they like it better when I leave the tank water level a little low. The water falls father and creates a higher current at that spot than if the tank were completely full, and they like that.

I had the same experience with a Bamboo shrimp. He was beautiful, but he rarely came out. The ones at the LFS just sit there and eat, but mine hid 90% of the time. I guess he hid too well because I haven't seen him in weeks, and I am pretty sure he is no longer in the tank. I have had to coax him out of small places in driftwood before, but I specifically looked and could not find him in anything coming out of that tank. For the going rate in the ATL of $12, they're just too expensive to chance. I'd rather pay $8 for a Peacock eel to hide than $12 for a shrimp to hide.
