Hey, I kind of wanted to get a banana plant for my tank but I've read conflicting details on their light requirements. Some say low, some say high, some say medium-high. So exactly how much light will I need? Also, is there anything else I should know about keeping one?

thanks a bunch!

They prefer high light and shallower waters. I have one in my 2 wpg CO2 injected plant and it is doing fine just a slow grower like maybe 1 new leaf every 2-3 weeks or so.

I have two in my 33 gal tank, diy co2, 2.3 wpg lighting. One was planted with two thirds of the banana part of the plant in the substrate and the other plant was barely in the substrate. The first plant is growing huge leaves, tall stems, nice bright color, new leaf every couple of weeks. The other plant is stunted compared to the first, but leaf formations and color are just as nice. They make a nice contrast to the other smaller leaved plants in my tank and hide the nasty looking roots of my wisteria.

Well I only have 1 wpg so I guess that's not a good choice. Thanks for the heads up, I probably would have gotten one tomorrow if I hadn't asked.

Does anyone know of a wide-leafed plant (similar to an amazon sword) what will do well with low light?

I am looking in my plant book that I got for Christmas from my kids !!
You could try a java fern, if you want something that will grow taller, or some type of anubias...good luck, Happy New Year!

Already have some java fern, but the anubias is just what i'm looking for!

thanks and Happy New Year!

I have the "afzelii" in my tank and it is growing nicely. It took a few weeks for it to settle in, and now is producing a couple of new leaves every couple of weeks. I don't have it tied down to anything...just sitting on top of the flourite.
