Hey yall do you know where i can get some base rock at? I was thinking about putting some base rock in my tank before i put the live rock so it can turn into live rock. I was reading this from the JasonA thread. also do you all know if there is a cheaper place to buy live rock the only places around my house are selling if for 8 and 9 dollars a pound. thanks for the help. im trying to start a 55 SW tank for the first time.

you can find live rock on the internet very cheap a lot cheaper than in lfs. the reason they price it so high is becuase you actually get to see what your getting and you dont online. so you could probably go to google and look up some online fish stores.

8 dollors a pound is pritty good im paying 16 dollors a keilo for fugi rock you can culture your ownlive rock but you will need a bit of live rock to get things going

whoa!

****...everywhere around here (northern cali) it goes for only us $5.99/lb!

I can get live rock locally for 4.99 a pound. Try drsfostersmith.com for the live rock. They usually have some specials on it. thatpetplace.com I think has about 50lbs of base rock for 39.99. You can even make your own base rock out of cement and crushed shells. What I want to know is how long it takes base rock to become live?

If you wanna buy a large bulk amount you can get it on ebay where after shipping can only come up to about $3-$4 a pounds. The more you buy the cheaper it is.

As far as dry alot of the shops around here sell big dry chunks of base rock for about $2 a pound. When we went to Hawaii in April I was able to bring back about 30 pounds of dry rock washed ashore. Real pretty pieces. When I got home I boiled it, set it outside to dry then stored it for a couple of months to make sure anything on it was completely clean. It has been a nice addition when I upgraded to a 75g and the purple coraline is started to grow on it. :)
