I have have my 29 Gallon Community Freshwater tank since 2005, where it started as a 10gal, then quickly upgraded to 29gal. I have always tried live plants, but with standard gravel it was an uphill battle. I recently switched to a better plant substrate, and thought I would share.

Here is a photo of the tank in 2006:

Another right before the substrate change (as you can see, only my Amazon Sword Plant (Echinodorus Amazonicus) is doing well, thus the need for a change, not to mention the black rock turned grey):

And here is what it looks like now:

Thanks. When I was planning this I thought I would need a few taller plants for the back. As I was taking the plant out I noticed that the Amazon Sword Plant (Echinodorus Amazonicus) had split into three. I may also add a African Green Hygro (Ammania gracilis) to add more color in the back.

Some of my plant ID's may be incorrect, if you notice and can correct any please feel free.

Well I think 3 big swords will be too much for the tank eventually. Also it looks like a red wendti crypt growing on the wood, it needs to be in the substrate.

Wait your using a Fluval 404 on a 29 Gallon?! That's a whole lot of filtration considering those are rated for a 125 gallon tank. I just bought a brandnew Fluval 205 today for my new 29 gallon... and that is rated for a 40 gallon which more then enough imo. Buy hey all the power to you!

Also is that a crypt plant on your driftwood? If so you should replant it into the substrate. Also just an fyi Amazon Swords will get HUGE, so you might need to take one or 2 of them out later on down the line. Until then keep them trimmed up nicely.

Nice looking tank tho! Def. keep us updated in plently of fish.

I guess it is red wendti crypt, I thought it was Red Rubin (Echinodorus Rubin). I will be moving that to the substrate, probably will move my Java Fern to the wood. I have had the Amazon Sword for a while now and it has never outgrown the tank @ 16".

With the filtration, I have used hang on filters with little success. So I decided to upgrade to a canister and the Fluval 404 was on sale. I am glad I got this one because it keeps the water crystal clear with very little effort. Not to mention I tend to overstock and need the over filtration to keep up :)
