My tank cycled quickly once I added some bioballs from a friend's filter. After five days with chemical levels at 0 I added some new fish on saturday. I got six Congo tetras-half of the planned school of 12.

They are as beautiful as I remember. There is plenty of (fake) plant cover for them across the back of the tank and in the corners and they spend most of the time hanging out among the plants in the corner, coming out to feed and after I turn off the light. They seem to get a little bolder each day, so I hope they will soon spend more time in the open water. If not I'll distribute some mid-sized 'plants' in the center of the tank and see if they are happy with that.

After a couple weeks or once the water has stabilized again, if there is a bump (0,0,0 since I added them), I'll get the loaches and then again later I'll get another 6 congos and finally the gouramis.

75 gal unplanted community tank:

aiming for
8 zebra danios
12 congo tetras
8-10 dwarf, yo-yo or zebra loaches
4-5 pearl gouramis
1 or 2 something else????

currently
8 zebra danios
6 congo tetras

I plan to have 12 in the end, but thought adding 6 at a time would be better in case of a spike-not to mention easier on my pocketbook. I thought 6 would be enough of a school to keep them happy. Sounds like I should get the other six next, before I get the loaches. If the water levels stay good I thought I'd get the next batch on the 9th or 17th.

It's too far a drive to just go get two-the closest store with congos is nearly 100 miles away.

then i guess 12 would be fine considering that gas would cost more for the trip!

<The loaches should be the last fish you add to your tank.

that's good to know. I'd read that the gouramis should be last. So the rest of the congos, then the gouramis, then the loaches. It will be hard to wait for them, I'm looking forward to watching their antics.
