I have a rena xp3 and a powerhead (maxijet 1200) on my 90 gallon. It works great. I just added the powerhead for more circulation. I also have a few plants and about 25 small fish and my nitrates stay around 5-10. I do regular water changes every week (25%-50%). Another good canister for that size would be a eheim 2217.
I also use a python for water changes. I purchsed mine at wal-mart. But yes you can get a hose attachment or parts for the python to make your own. It's like filling and emptying a waterbed. It's super easy and the best investment I have made in this hobby.
