best 90g+ tank filtration

For a 90g+, what type of filter would work best? Is there a better way than doing 30+g water changes for nitrate/ammonia control? We are relocating our gf to a 90+ g in a couple weeks, and would like to know ahead of time what type of filter would be best for it. Right now, our largest tank is 35g and we use hob or internal filters.

If a sump would be best, what size would it need to be? How do we figure out how big it needs to be?

I would suggest a canister. I have a Fluval FX5 on my 125, and have no complaints.
There are several other brands available. I am sure there will be other suggestions.

I should mention that I do not have goldfish though, but I do know they are poop machines.

Not sure about live plants with goldfish, but my Nitrate level is maintained at areound 10 PPM with live plants and water changes. The ammonia level should be controlled by the bacterial filtration provided by bacteria living primarly in your filter.

Water changes will control your nitrate, that or live plants, not the filter.

I agree with the big canister, but I'd probably add either another small canister or a HOB so that you have some redundancy.

DSB is in fact a SW method. I've never read of it being applied in FW and don't think it could.

WCs (especially with messy fish) are always going to be necessary to keep your NO3 in safe levels.

I run an XP3 and an AC 70 on a densely planted/high bio-load/high tech 80gal.

I don't know if a sump would be best, for you.
