What would be recommended as the most active algae eater, most effective and stays relatively small????

Otocynclus... BUT depends on if there is a problem or not. They are effective in keeping the algae controlled but if you are looking to add them because of the algae, perhaps there are more issues...... Tell us about your tank.

I have several tanks three bowfront 46's one with 5 Tang African cichlids, the other with two Severum and two Convicts, the third deciding what to do with. Also have a 20 with ghost shrimp and guppies. Have fresh water clams in each. No algae problems at all and change about 20% water each week. Just like to stay on top of things is all. Pleco's tend to get big, are pretty inactive and looking for something that can survive in those tanks and keep things neat without taking up to much space.

I was looking for an answer to my question. Not an opinion on whether I should add one or not. I know that answer already.

hmmm... I'm not sure the otto's would be a good fit for the cichlid tanks but would suggest maybe a bristlenose pleco. They are one of the smaller plecos and should do well with the cichlids.

For black brush algae and most hair algae, true Siamese Algae Eaters and American flag fish (Jordanella floridae) will do the job. Do not mix the flag fish with long-finned species. They may be part of the killifish group but they act a lot like cichlids and should not be mixed with fish who cannot defend themselves easily.
