What do you guys recommend running as biological media in a Fluval 305?

I've been googling and see that a lot of people like Efhisubstrat Pro, what do you guys think?

I use an eheim 2236 and have always used Efhisubstrat Pro. I have never had a complaint. I even place some in the bottom of my HOB filters so if I change them I don't have to do another mini-cycle.

Personally I prefer sponges over ceramic media. Along with all the surface area for bacteria to colonize they also collect more debris that can easily be rinsed out amd still retain the bacteria. The eheim media is recommended to be replaced periodically, sponges are good for years until they actually start falling apart, and they're cheaper to replace. I picked up several full sheets (2'x4') of poret foam, and cut some to fit my eheim Pro II canister filter baskets.

what are your thoughts on bio balls like these:

I got a bunch for free.

Bioballs are great for wet/dry SW setups, not so much for FW though. The design doesn't provide as much surface area as other media under water, they're made to increase O2 saturation as water trickles over them. On the other hand they are solid, no tiny pores to eventually clog up and make them less effective like the eheim media or similar materials.

I have the 205 and i use them pot scrnbbers they work great have lots of surface area and CHEAP

here is a pic

Any given media will be several times as efficient at oxidizing ammonia if it isn't submerged.

One side has the sponge then on other side there are baskets 3 stacks , two stacks of pads and one empty atm

hope the pic clears it up
