I have heard eheim is the best, it may look expensive, but its worth every penny. magum is good as well, I use one and it works great in my 55 gallon. you can buy them at
thanks soulkeeper. what do you know about eheim's ecco siries? which model number (of any brand) would be appropriate for a tweny nine gallon? i've never dealt with cannisters before, so i really don't know what to look for.
I'm not sure an eheim is the best choice for a heavily planted tank. eheim's strength is in it's biological filtration. For fish only tanks, the ecco series is really cool.
for a 29 gal planted you could go with 2213 classic filled completely with ceramic noodles (I only parrot the words of those more learned than I).
An Hob like an aquaclear gives you the chance to clean mechanical filtration frequently.
good luck
Another option, instead of an enheim, is to get a Filstar XP# series. I got a Filstar XP3 that was about 1/2 the price of a comparably-size Enheim, and I've been very pleased with it.
The review is a little out of date, as I'm now using the filter purely for biologoical filtration, supplemented with a Magnum 350 for mechanical filtration. However, the XP3 works just great with EHEIM media.
