Best Choice for Single Species Rift Lake 55g

i dont see an issue between lelupi and calvus. should be fine, as far as im concerned you could ad other species, maybe one more with a single speciman. or perhaps 2, all depends on what they are.

Thanks for the response, Austin.

Adding a single sounds good -- I like frontosa, but I think those are too big (a) for my tank, and (b) to mix with calvus and lelupi. Yes? No? Could I do a front?

If not that, what about a single Copadichromis borleyi? If I could find one that's reddish (and therefore distinct from calvus and lelupi) I think that could work, yes?

Thanks!

definatly no frontosa. and that other fish is a malawian, which is why i didnt recognise the name. im not sure on that. someone else would have to tell you on that one, cuz i dont know to much about malawis besides a few mbunas. i stick to tang stuff, personally id go find a different tang species that you like on cichlid forum, keep it a little more natural. plus the bahaviors are more interesting. its your call, but id be able to help a little better with tangs. do you know what locality of calvus your gonna get or what locality of lelupi your gonna get?

I'd probably look for the "lemon yellow" leleupi and "black" calvus (not sure if that indicates the locality..??). Can you give me some suggestions on a singleton tang to add?

yeah, not the locality, but the color morph is the same thing. sounds cool, thats a good contrast. um, i think a single brichardi or similar fish would be fine, but DEFINATLY BY ALL MEANS not a pair, the fry raise hell and than everything else dies. but a single one shouldnt have aggresion issues. they are really pretty, they have streamers on their fins, or at least the males do. julidochromis i think would be fine. i tell everyone this one, but you cant go wrong with a species of goby cichlid. they are the coolest unique little fish ever, loads of personality. ill try to find you some others as well.

Instead of a Frontosa you could go with a Tretocephalus which looks similar but only reaches 6" with out the nuchal hump..

i was thinking that but wasnt sure, i know they have really bad conspecific aggression, or is that the sexfaciatus? im not sure, i get those 2 mixed up alot.

Sexi's are ok the Trets can be quite aggressive towards similar appearance fish..

they sure are pretty though. hey pit, in the jewel of the rift video, what is the blue striped fish that eats the other fishes scales that it looks similar to? was it a tret eating a front?

Na it was a false Tret that was eating the scales of a true Tret i forget the correct name but it is called the false something..
