Best filter?

You purchase an undergravel filter plate system for your size tank, and add powerheads with reverse flow capability...like....

Some plants can be disturbed, but I have not had any issues, just keep the flow to the low side. Also, depending on the fish you keep it may be necessary to containerize your plants.

Ok, if I understand this right, with a canister filter, you would hook the water output of the filter to the input of the powerhead (or is there a pump needed in the middle?), the powerhead shoots the water to the ugf where it percolates the water up through the gravel and is reclaimed and filtered by the cannister to start the cycle over?

I run my power heads independent of the canister. They sit on the lift tubes with a sponge on their intake and the discharge goes down the lift tube. The suction and discharge of the canister is totally seperate. Though there are some who drive their plates by canister discharge.
One good quality filter is all you need.I run an Eheim pro also I keep a sponge filter in my 55g.Proper stocking and feeding are just as important as pristine water.
there are so many options. the best option is to go with 2 of what ever you pick. that way you have a back up. i like canisters. have hobs also that i like. not a fan of ugf but they do work.
