What's the best filter for a 55 gal long tank? I'm setting this up in about 2 weeks and want pristine clear water when it's done cycling.

I love my Rena XP3.

I wouldn't say that any one filter is better for a certain size tank. What are you looking for except "pristine" water? Cost? Size? Media capabilities? Ease of use?

Pristine to me is an RUFG with powerheads, a good canister of your choice and running carbon.

Any slightly oversized filter, combined with regular maintenance and water changes, should keep your water prisitine. The rest is just a matter of personal preference and opinion.

Canister Filters seem to do the best job though.

Puff,

That's the issue, I really dont know what I am looking for. I'm still new to this and have just used the filter that came with my current 12 gal tank. I've read to get an oversize filter, but not so big you pummel the fish with it.

As far as price goes, $150ish? Size really isn't an issue.

What's an RUFG?

RUFG Reverse Under Gravel Filter Use power heads that push water down thru the lift tubes, under the plates and back up thru the substrate. Helps keep the substrate free of debri. The debri is removed from the water column by power filters such as HOB or canister.

I like Magnum 350 canisters. One should be enough on a 55.

It really is a matter of personal preferance. If it were me I would put a good canister filter on the tank such as the eheim classic 2217 and a good HOB filter such as one in the aquaclear series.

Ok, looks like I have alot to learn before I set this tank up. IF I wanted to set up a RUFG, it looks like I have to buy a seperate water pump for that to push the water down below the gravel line? Is there a place to buy a complete setup for that or is this something you need to make yourself? If I do natural plants will this upflowing water disturb them?

Sorry for all the probably dumb questions but I made ALOT of mistakes with my first tank and really want to do this right having talked my wife into making this tank a real centerpiece in the living room.
