Best fish species for mosquito control in outdoor ponds?

Hi

The house next door to us has ponds in the garden; trouble is, the owner doesn't live in the house and so neglects it, resulting in mosquito-breeding heaven in that pond. I've tried pouring oil on the suface but that's messy and gets washed off by heavy rain, so...

I'm thinking of putting a few fish in there to eat the mozzies, probably Whitecloud Mountain Minnows or Goldfish of some kind - unless you have other suggestions??? Which would be the best species?

The ponds are quite small. Minimum air temperature here is about 45F/7C at night in winter / maximum 105F/40C in the day in summer. There are cats and predatory birds in the area, so whichever fish I choose needs to be able to sustain its population despite occasional predatory attention.

Thanks :)

i would recommend a native fish, i mean any fish with a mouth will eat mosquitos. mosquitofish arnt better than any other fish at eating the bugs, thats just a misconception derived from their name. and it would suck to introduce a nonative fish...

+1 Agreed. Being from Florida, "cam191919" should know about the consequences....lots of problems with exotics in Florida waters.

When those ponds overflow during heavy rains, there's a chance of your fish escaping into nearby waterways so it's best to go native.
