Best livebearing fish?

And that's why I'd rather not keep one.

Hobbyists do a major part in conservation efforts of many wild type livebearers. These fish live in small ponds and lakes that are often razed over and filled in for development, or polluted to the point where they cannot survive. If you really wanted to do your part, you'd breed em and spread em around :D. I'd have to second the goodieids, as there are many very colorful types, and limias as well.

You'd choose to not keep a fish simply because it isn't "popular" at you LFS?
