Best place to vacation?

A girl here did backpacking through Europe a few years ago, she had a blast. My brother is going to Amsterdam (alone!) for 3 weeks at the end of September. He has gone 3 or 4 times, and loves it there. Personally, I'd be hesitant about travelling anywhere dangerous (obviously!) alone... I don't think South America is safe for a foreigner to travel alone... you know, drug trade and the like... Eeek, South Africa... one of my co workers actually got married there (his wife is south african) and he said it was one of the most beautiful places he'd ever been, but he didn't think he would ever venture there w/out his wife, because she knows the place. Europe!! Definately Europe! Or what about Australia?

The places i'm attracted to are not particularily safe. I read a book called "The worlds most dangerous places" and was enlightened. I realized how safe Canada is compared to 99% of the countries out there. My gf is from south africa, and my sisters bf is from south africa as well. From the sounds of it, you're not even safe if you live in a gated community with armed guards posted at each entrance (scary). I want to see Morocco. Or maybe Venezuala, Brazil or Colombia (to see ancient ruins). I'm not too into seeing old buildings around europe as much as seeing natural sites. If i had the money, i'd go to the Seychelles Island or the Galapagos Islands... Mauritius sounds nice too.
 
EGYPT!!! Though I don't know if it's safe there, but one of my good friends loves, loves all things Egypt/pyramid/ancient... she had a trip booked (2 1/2 week long tour group type trip), 9/14 of 2001. Needless to say that trip was cancelled by the tour company, and she hasn't made new arrangements. She used the money that she had saved for the trip for something else she's always wanted -- a chest reduction, lmao, sorry if tmi, but I think it's funny, haha!.

Another place I'd love to go would be the rainforest, you know like in that movie Romancing the Stone? That seems like an adventure (dangerous). I've always wanted to see Greece, and all the ancient buildings like the collesium (sp?) and stuff there.
 
Nepal is incredible. A little nasty by Western standards, but just unbelieveably beautiful. My stepfather used to teach there, my stepsister was born there, and my parents have taken trips back in recent years.

And if you're short by Western standards, you'll love it.
 
I'd really like to visit the Andes someday. There are supposed to be many Incan sites of real interest, and it looks like beautiful mountains. Plus, the neat spots aren't as swarming with tourists. So I'd vote South America over North Africa.
 
What about places in Asia? I really want to see Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The cities dont really appeal to me... but some of the country and coastline is beautiful. There are lots of ruins there too... like Angkor Wat in cambodia!
I would love to do Indonesia as well but it is very dangerous there too.
Egypt isnt very safe right now... as it hasnt been for a while. I think areas around there are getting better though, including Morocoo and Algeria.
I want to go to Lake Malawi and Tangynika and see all the cichlids i am so in love with in the wild... the CRLCA and i think ACA (not so sure) has trips anually to the lakes with accomodation and you get to see the cichlid export buisness and such. Its very expensive though... about $6000 CAD including airfare and everything.
South america would be nice too... like Costa Rica then down into Peru and Brazil and Chile is supposed to be nice as well.

So many places to go so little time!
Have you ever considered taking a road trip around Canada and the northern States? I have driven almost every year partially across canada and down into Montana and Wyoming and South Dakota... and some of the most beautiful country is hidden right under our noses! Seeing Glacier National Park in Montana is amazing. I mean, i've hiked in the Swiss Alps and Glacier/Waterton Park (states) definately compares! Very beautiful.

I think no matter where you choose to go you wont be disappointed if you go with an open mind and are willing to do some strange things... hehe

thailand is cool, you can go to places that will let you do a lot because their exchange rates kinda suck. but then they also have some of the best hotels in the world. plus lots of nice fish related places.

or come to san diego, we really need some tourist money.

Yeah, but its too similar to whats up here.

I want to see rainforest with all sorts of crazy animals and weather. Right now Central America or South America are sparking my interest. I just don't want to be perpetually wet, get kidnapped, get eaten alive by bugs, get robbed by police or anything along those lines.

My archaeology prof is the worlder leader in studying orangutans. Shes spent 30+ years studying them in indonesia (Borneo to be exact). Sort of resembles one too. Indonesia doesn't sound bad now either. I recommend reading her book "Reflections of Eden", by Birute Galdikas for those of you who are interested. Its about her life living with orangutans, very interesting.
 
Honestly, Portugal Is a great place to go.If you are looking for extremely good food and some really nice sights go there. If you the religious type visit Fatima where Mary appered. Its really cool and you can find some nice cheap air fare over theree
