Just got a new job and I want to put a small tank on my desk. Nothing bigger thank 5 gal as I only have about 12" of space I designated for the tank. Any ideas on good quality small tanks? Like ones with a filter, lights, etc..

What name brand tank would you recommend? I'm def thinking about going with a blue beta.

i know aqueon has durable glass tanks. I've had a 3 gallon acrylic and wasn't too happy with it, although they are supposedly lighter and also durable. It did come with a light which was pretty nice. Do you plan on getting its own light or just using the room light? I don't have much experience with those small size set ups that come with everything, so I can't help you there. I know of a really good small quiet filter by RedSea/Azoo (marketed under different names).

Note that if you get a heater, most small volume ones aren't very reliable. They can be reliable but it just takes that one time it's not and you could have a dead fish on your hands.

I was planing on doing some extra lighting besides the ambient room lights. Not sure what I'm going to do about the heating part. I have a left over 50W from my 10 gal that I might try and use. Also, great suggestion on the filter. I may use that one.

I have 2.5 aqueon acrylic bow, I'm not a huge fan of acrylic it does scratch easy but I learned as long as I use a sponge for cleaning and keep on top of it so nothing that needs to be scraped grows it works ok. The lighting is good enough for some plants(hair grass, java fern, moss) I did ditch the stock filter in favor of a Red Sea, over all for $19.99 I'm happy with it.

Of all my little tanks, I'd say the Finnex is my favorite, good lighting, decent little cannister filter but more costly then most other small tanks $70. http://www.selectaquariumsupply.com/servlet/the-90/4,-AQUARIUM,-DELUXE,-EPOCH,/Detail

I'm in love with the Pico but kind of worried about the open top in a doctors office. :/ Don't know if that will slide with the boss. I like the Marineland but not a big fan of Hex tanks. I'm going to do some shopping around this weekend petco, LFS, you know all the good spots. Thanks for all the help.

Yeah it kind of seems unsanitary for an open-top desk aquarium to be in a doctor's office. It probably isn't dirty or anything, but if you're in a place where clients come in often, I'm not sure if I'd go that route.

I have an Eclipse 5 gallon (Acrylic) on my desk at home. It's not quite hex, as its face is a little curved rather than 3 flat panels of acrylic. IMO, it looks nicer than hexes but just as easy to scrape (if you need to) as a rectangle tank. It's listed at Petco but you can probably find it cheaper somewhere else. Mine was $20 slightly used.

Its measurements are listed as 10.5" L X 15.5" W X 14.5", but its footprint isn't as big as I expected it to be when I first got it. My desk is about 31" X 20" and it leaves me with plenty of room. It has the little chord keeper thing in the back that keeps the chord tidy and in place, and it takes 15w incandescent or <11w CFL.

It uses that bio-wheel filtration method, but it's been working stellar for me. Very clean and quiet, and I don't use the cartridges they make for them either, I just customized my own. It's planted with black sand and a white halfmoon betta, who seems pretty happy in there. I don't think I'd like to have kept him in anything smaller than 5g.
