Best way to clean salt off filter case?

I just picked up a used Skilter Power Filter off someone who was using it for a marine tank. There is a bunch of white "crud" (salt or calcium deposits?) on the plastic casing, and parts of the propeller. I tried using a sponge and hot water / rubbing alcohol but the stuff just doesn't wanna come off. Any suggestions?
