I was hoping to put around 5 or 6 cherry shrimp in my 5 gallon betta tank. My question is will my betta eat them? Also, if the shrimp happen to breed will my betta eat the babies? Thanks.
I think it depends on the personality of the Betta but there is a very strong chance yours will eat or at least harass the cherry shrimp. My betta Doesn't even like the Apple Snails in his tank.
I had ghost shrimp with my betta. I had the shrimp for 6-7 months and the betta for about 3 months now. The betta didn't eat the shrimp, but I saw him harrassing them from time to time. All my shrimp died this week, either of old age or from the stress of being harrassed too much. I'd recently removed some plastic plants because I thought they might have been tearing my bettas fins, so they very well could have been more vulnerable to harrassment.
This makes me not really want to put shrimp back in there immediately. I'm going to add some heavy plant cover with some floating plants and anubias/crypts, some more hiding spots, and then I may try some shrimp again. I'm trying to decide between shrimp and oto cats.
My betta did the same thing to the cherry shrimps as above, he harrased them from time to time, but later they all died within 2-3 weeks = / Maybe it was really the stress of all the harassment?
