My betta is in a ten gal. tank. Their are a few fake plants and a castle for him to swim and hang out in. He has taken up swimming back and forth almost like charging the sides of the tank. Is this normal for a betta to do this. Or is he just happy to be out of that little bowl he was stuck in at the LFS? Thanks for any advice you can give.

Sounds like he is showing off to hs reflection. He might think it's another male betta. You can tell because he will flare his gills and spread his fins. If this is wat it is, it's perfectly normal.

normal for bettas is realative, one betta can be as different as night and day from another on some things..... most fish have a display posturing and the betta's are well known for theirs... aside from that... one my wife had would dance or at least move rythmically to music, he was a fiesty one that flared more than not

the one I have now is as mellow as they get. I think I have seen him only think about flaring once or twice in the 6 months I have had him. and that was mostly about figguring out the relationship with my angel... once I held a mirror up to the tank, he looked at it and then payed me attention over the mirror. anything I do in the tank, siphon clean the gravel, plant plants, clean the glass..., he thinks is just for his entertanement

I've got a real beauty that I purchased about six to eight weeks ago for a 29 gallon tank. He's deep cobalt blue and is very tame...to coin a phrase! I will put my fingers sometimes in the tank and he'll rub up against my fingers. He also knows he's about to be fed. He's quite laughable!!!
