My powder blue gourami died last week in my 75g community. I had to leave town in an emergency a few weeks ago and had very little time to show the kids how to look after 6 tanks. Well I was away for 11 days and got back to a few casualties - fish, plants and some coral. It could have been worse so I'm not upset and appreciate that my kids done their best.

So here's my question. I have a lone betta in a 20g and am thinking about moving it into the 75g. The tank has blackskirts, pristella and cardinal tetras as shoaling fish. Cories, otos and shrimp for the bottom crew. My only real concern is that the blackskirts may get nippy with the betta. The powder blue was the dominant fish in the tank so maybe they will shy away from the betta who is the same color. I've also read that bettas can sometimes eat cherry shrimp although mine are actually able to reproduce in the 75g even after running the gauntlet through the community.

What do you think? Give it a go and keep an eye on things and abort mission if it gets chaotic.

I've blamed black skirts before and wouldn't try it myself. However my last experience with them was 20 years ago so maybe it's more my memory than reality.

That is the fear. My blackskirts have never shown aggression to other tankmates (except they chase each other now and again) but I don't have any other fish that could be considered possible targets.

I have a betta in with pristella tetras and blackskirts and have not had a problem as of yet :) If I were you, I would give it a try...just be sure to watch them for a bit and if you have a problem, you can always remove the betta.

I wasn't going to give this a try unless I got a positive response, so I was kind of resigned to giving up on the idea.

I'll give it go and keep the bettas current tank running for a week or two, just in case.
