Betta Breeding: Substrate?

for the actual spawning and when dad betta is tending to the eggs/fry you want a bare bottom tank so that dad can see the eggs/fry when they fall out of the nest. after dad's job is done/he's removed from the tank and the fry are free swimming then i'd add indian almond leaves over time (so that there is no sudden change in the water chemistry).

I don't breed bettas, but I would recommend Leaf litter
Ok, thanks.

Wish I would have thought of that. The breeding tank is set up and I have sand, but there's some java moss under the intended nesing site. I'll see how it goes.

move the java moss and clear the sand away from the area under the nest site. fry can get stuck in the moss too easily before their free swimming. also, dad betta is going to have a hard time picking the eggs and fry up from the sand bed.

you'll be doing lots of water changes on that tank while the fry grow and you are feeding them multiple times a day. bare bottom tanks are much easier to deal with when you have fry.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll clear the bottom.

iv bred bettas a few times, the best results were always with bare bottom.

good good.

you can add some extra floating plants (silk or live) for cover while the male and female are 'doing the deed', so that the female has somewhere to retreat should the male start to get aggressive or vice versa! some females will beat the snot out of their 'hubbies').

I'll try to get some tomorrow. I can actually see my female doing that, she's really feisty. I put the tip of my finger in her tank for a little, she bit it until I took it out :grinyes:

I have a feeling she will wear the pants in that relationship.
