Years ago when I kept peaceful community tanks I usually had a male betta in them. The fins were not as long as those in smaller captivity with more room to swim, but they did quite well and were still happy and beautiful. Not sure about GBR's, either them or the betta could perceive eachother as a threat? Guessing the GBR would win in the end (sorry).

It really depends on the size of the tank. As for schooling fish I'd go with Harliquin Rasboras. The Rams, only if the tank is a 30 or larger.

Tetras do fine. They are too big for bettas to eat, plus they are peaceful.
