Hi everyone,
I upgraded my betta to a 3 gallon filtered tank, and he stopped building bubble nests. He appears happy (active anyway, how can you really tell if they're happy?), but now I'm wondering if he's being over-exerted by the filter current. I've heard that bubble nests were a sign of happiness & health, and I'm wondering if I have traded betta "serenity" for pristine water quality...

The reason theres probably no bubble nest is because the surface is probably being disturbed.
I wouldn't be concerned unless he looks ill or acts ill.

My betta is in a 5 gallon with an internal filter. I rarely see bubble nests. But I do see them occasionally. But after he is done making them they tend to disappear fast do to surface agitation. So there is a great chance that your guy is making them but you aren't getting to see them.

It can also take a betta awhile to get used to a new home, especially one with current. He will get used to his new home and is probably very interested in exploring right now, more so than making nests.

My betta, Jakers, is in a planted Eclipse 6 gal tank with no aerator. I have anacharis planted and floating. One bunch is in front of the filter outflow to lessen the surface agitation (water sprite works well for this, too), the other bunch breaks or touches the top of the water on the other, "calmer", side. Jakers builds his nests right in the anacharis in both places and they stay put. He's actually got two nests going right now. He's a busy little guy :P

Roan Art you are lucky! My tank is loaded with anacharis, and although my betta was building bubble nests at the beginning (1st week or so in the new tank), I don't see them anymore...that's what's got me wondering if something is wrong.

Maybe you have too many? Can you give me an idea of what you tank is like: size, readings, occupants and so forth, how often you do water changes, how many plants and what type, etc.,.).

You might want to move stuff around. I honestly think bettas have the ability to get "bored" after a while. I spend about 75% of my time working on my computer and Jakers is right beside my monitor, so I'm kinda "in tune" with how he feels.

Has your fish ever thrown himself on the bottom of your tank and acted like he was dying just to get your attention? Jakers does this! If I leave the room and come back -- out of his line of sight -- he's either swimming around, or building a nest, or trying to bully the pl*co. The *minute* he sees me he throws himself to the ground or on the java fern and stares at me with the most baleful expression. I put a huge flashlight inbetween us so I couldn't see him and he started doing it on the other side of the tank. He's such a ham!

If I knew how to upload pictures I would show you the tank...it's a Waterhome 3 tank housing 1 solitary betta. I have a bunch of anacharis at each corner (about 3 stalks per bunch) and some valisneria in the center, under the light. The plant stalks grow long & float a bit over the top of the tank, and I try to arrange the anacharis near the filter output, but it just moves away with the current (actually I have a sneaking suspicion that HE'S moving it around, he's always jamming himself into every planted corner!).

He's not acting sick at all, he's actually VERY active. He seems obsessed with the current, "fighting" it and pushing his way to the thermometer, where he perches and regains his breath, doing this over and over. I was concerned because he seems a little hyper & the bubbles are gone...but maybe he's PERFORMING?

Your fish sounds fine...color and activity level are a sign of good health. Mine acts the same way as your describe- swimming in the current, resting, and swimming more. Mine plays dead and seems to pose for the camera when I start flashing away at the tank, and somehow knows when I am going to remove him from the tank and plays catch....swimming in hiding places when I approach and out of them to taunt me. Either that or I am neurotic and have invented all these behaviors!!

unless it is listless at the bottom all the time, not eating , and pale, you have nothing to worry about really. good luck!

FisheyLisa is right, your guy is just fine and dandy and, yes, he is performing for you!

I tied my anacharis together and slipped the ends under the tank hood so that it doesn't move around too much. That might help you keep yours in one spot.

BTW, I commend you for putting your betta in a bigger tank. You rock!

Hugs,
Roan

You are most definitely not imagining those behaviours :) The best part of all are those Betta Davis eyes they give us when they are being drama queens.

I love my betta! He has to be the coolest fish I have.
