Betta for a community tank?

will bettas do okay with rainbowfish?

Im not too sure about rainbow ... help me out guys but from your setup its only the gourami that will compete with betta

Depend on the lighting for the plants so if u see at a pet shop nice plants u want compare it with the lighting u have or will put in there

For plants I would suggest Java Fern; Java Moss; anubias and maybe water wisteria - I have it in my low light tank and it is thriving - amazingly!

You could go with a dwarf cichlid like German blue rams or Bolivian Rams. You could also go with apistos or a dwarf flag cichlid. Keep in mind that the rams are low level swimmers and you have 8 bottom dwellers already but it could work. I would look into mid level swimmers say like another group of smaller tetras like rummynose or harleys to give you more activity in the middle.

This would probably work. Rainbows don't tend to be very aggressive but I've heard one report of nippy rainbows. They were M. doublayi. Try some M. praecox. They are pretty and only 2 inches long which is better if you don't have a huge tank.

Do you already have a betta? If so, try him out in the community tank. I have kept bettas with gouramis before with no issues, but that was a long time ago. Recently they have been dosing dwarf gouramis with huge amounts of hormones to turn the females into males because they are more colourful. I suspect that all that testosterone makes them act like a male with too much testosterone.

I currently have one male betta and three females in my community tank. They are going just fine. If you keep females in the same tank it should be a big one with plants. He occasionally shoos one of the females away from 'his' floating plants but his attention span is pretty short - he only chases for 5 or 6 inches, then gets distracted by something else. Mostly they get along with each other. You do have to be prepared to separate the male and females if they breed, read up on this before you decide to keep male and female bettas together.

Other than that, male guppies may be an issue due to their finnage but again, it depends on the betta. I saw a betta in a small tank with about 30 male guppies in the LFS and he didn't bat an eye at any of them.

One thing that you need to be very careful about if you have a betta in a community tank is to avoid any fin nippers or aggressive fish. Tiger barbs, red tailed sharks and the like are definite no nos and can tear up a betta in minutes.

Oh, and only one male betta to a tank, but I'm sure you knew that!

Yep

The betta will not get along with the gourami, otherwise it would have worked. As for plants, what is the lighting on the tank?

does this apply to female bettas with male gouramis too? how about female bettas with female gouramis? i've been wondering if i should add a female betta for a while now...

Female bettas and female gouramis seem to get along with most tankmates for the most part. It's mainly competition between the males that is a problem. Although I have one female betta who is a bit aggressive to the other two females bettas, but nothing too serious. It was only an issue when I had three of them quarantined in an 8 gallon tank, and only after they'd been there a few weeks. I moved her to the big tank and no more problem, even when I moved the other two.

I'd say female betta is close to ideal for peaceful community tank.
