Betta Heater

Native Longhorn
Hello all, I recently got a 2G tank from petsmart and put a betta in there. After the initial curiosity of the new digs, he has become pretty much lazy and just hangs out on the bottom until I come in and then he'll "awaken" somewhat. I also noticed the thermometer doesn't get up to even the low end of the preferred temp. I've read bettas can get lethargic in the cold, and LA has been unusually cool, even this late in the year. So I'm thinking of getting a heater, but this being a small tank, can someone suggest a good small heater that would fit in there? I have a bigger one for my 29G but I think that would be too big. I've seen a few on petsmarts page, but not sure how big they are and just haven't had a chance to go by and check em out.

Thanks!

In my 2 gallon betta tank I use a Hydor Theo 25 watt submersible heater. It works great and is adjustable.

The best thing to do would be to upgrade the tank, then heaters are easier to manage, having a 25 watt heater getting stuck on the on position in a 2 gallon tank will heat it up fast and the one VHX showed you doesnt even have a thermostat and is always on.

agree, did not know it does not have thermostat. maybe it's not a great idea....but 7.5 w.......is not really strong.

I woudl agree with getting a 5 gallon tank and the smallest heater possible. It is amazing how much more active bettas can be and how cool they are in nice warm water and lots of area to swim. Plus you can get a real filter for a 5 gallon, much nicer than the ittle ones sold for 2 gallon.

It may seem like an extra cost but a slightly larger tank will also be nice for you to look at. Add some plants (live or fake) and the betta will put on a show for you.

Thanks for the heater idea! I was overjoyed, how perfect, the picture even had a betta in it! But with the other replies my glee has waned. I do have a larger tank, a 29 gallon that I will start putting together as I get more settled. I just wanted a small betta tank for the time being. If it wasn't so cold still it wouldnt be a problem. Poor guy, he's just been lounging on the bottom in a little cave. What is the thought on a light bulb in the silver housings with some diffusion over it so as not to be too strong, and just shine that on the tank? Only thing is its acrylic so I'm somewhat leary of melting. A 50w bulb though would be fine I would think.

Thanks again!
