I like the cousin of both. The paradise fish. Tough as nails and absolutely gorgous when full grown. The blues are very nice but the blacks are incredible.

bettas definitely-i have 4 :p. although i may get a dwarf gourami for my empty 10.

I'm with Scott - I like the Paradise Fish. I don't know if I like it more than a Betta, but I definitely prefer both over Gouramis. Of course, it isn't a very large preference; they are all nice.

i have never owned a betta, but i think the giant gouramis are fascinating to behold, and I must say I love my golden three spot, he rules my 29!!!! theres something about the way they check stuff out with those "feelers", still looks odd to me.

I've never been a fan of bettas, but I do like the smaller types of gouramis.

The Burmese chocolate gouramis I have are really cool little fish. Licorice gouramis are also very nice. Both have a reputation of being hard to keep, but my Burmese chocolates are doing well so far. I can't wait to try and find their spawning trigger!

never had any bettas. people always talk about them being so grumpy. and the way they're always kept separately in those tiny holder tanks in the lsf always puts me off.
i've got a moonlight gourami in one tank, and a honey gourami in the other and they're both peacefull inquisitive fish. and absolutely beautiful! The moonlight looks so good in a subdued planted tank.
Mind you, I used to have dwarf gouramis and they were real moody beggers. I would'nt get them again.

Bettas or Gouramis, Bettas or Gouramis????

Gosh, I've had both. Beloved Phoenix, purple and flame male Betta, over 3 years, in a 2 gallon tank. I would even take him with my when I went to see my mom in FLA--ack!!! Knew his name, knew me, glided through the water with such grace.

The Three Boys: 3 Dwarf Powder Blue Gouramis. Had them since last November. Spike, separate store from Harry and Larry. And so, they hang out in opposite sides of the tank. Spike has staked out territory in a broken clay pot (love those things!) and senses when H or L nears (they have a rock pile and some big plant). He's in there right now as the other boys look for possibly overlooked scraps of food, now Harry is several inches over Spike, and Larry is 5 inches to the side--skirmish? Plays into a fake-out. Spike, however, remains vigilant.
They're a real hoot, and even tho' small compared to the other Gouramis (which I would now like to try), packed with personality. It's hard to say which species I like best, since they are so wonderfully different, plus, The Three Boys together create a completely different synergy.

Final analysis: I love them both!!!!!!!!! Or all!!!!!!!! Whatever!!!!!!!!!!!
