Betta questions

I think you have swordtails mixed up with mollies.

This very site actually lists Swordtails as brackishwater fish.

...without getting into all the science, etc., they appear happy and healthy so salty they stay.

Thanks for the links Misa :thm: ...some of them didn't come up in Google searches as I've been reading over the past few days.

The salt you are adding does nothing to create brackish conditions, which contains much more than just NaCl.. They prefer high TDS water, which is created by adding anything into solution--salt works, but so will having high GH.

Sorry, what is TDS?

I'm thinking of slowly weaning my swords off of their 2tsp/gallon of salt water. I'd like to put a couple Ottos in there to control the algae and they have a very low tolerance to salt. I'm worried that the Ottos may disturb the swords.....who are very sedentary while they sleep. I had to get rid of a golden algae eater that was far too aggressive towards them. Everything I read about ottos says they should be fine though.

In my experience, otos are pretty harmless. They mind thier own business and spend most of the day hiding out. I thought I had 3 otos in my tank because that's all I could ever find...I thought I remembered having 4...but just could never find the 4th one.. :look:

I did a major cleaning of the tank, took everything out and lo and behold...I did have 4 otos in there after all...lol... As far as fun to watch fish...they aren't, because you almost never see them...lol..but they are a nice fish to put with bettas if you're looking for tankmates for them.

Considering that Bettas are freshwater fish, you really don't have to go with salt. You should definitely go with the heater set at 75 -78 degrees, and, I don't know about any other Betta owner but my Bettas are more interested in me than their tankmates. I wouldn't worry about him getting lonely as long as you are there to spend time with him.

I agree with Beeker, your betta will prefer your company. My betta occassionally tries to chase his zebra danio tankmates, but mainly he gets excited when I come to see him. Also, one of my cats tries to pat him and he seems to enjoy that attention, too.
