Betta what is wrong!?

I will pass that idea on to palmbreeze. Seems logical - but I dont know. Hmmm, excuse for another tank....????

This tank is "fairly" crowded but still has much room - but if you are living only near the top it can be crowded.

Thanks

Hi Palm, I just purchased a Crown Tail and he is doing the same thing as yours. He is like a little beach ball because every time he dives to the bottom of the tank then he just bobs right back to the surface and it isn't 5 minutes and he is back on his side.

Has anything worked for you yet? We are going to try the pea thing today. We have had the tank under Betta Max medication (nitrfurizone) for a week with no result.

We may advance to Maroxy and Maracin II in a couple of days depending on what we see.

Update

The betta is back to normal now. :dance2: :dance2: :dance2:

Problem: We believe it was the huge rush of water dumping it back into the tank and he got "tangled" in it during a water change.

Solution: Wait and keep a GOOD eye on him. It took maybe 5 to 7 days to clear it up. On future water changes, siphone the water back in - do not dump it back in the tank.

THis sounds exactly like hers. Have you done a water change recently? Did you "dump" the water in or siphon it back in??? From what we have done, her bettas have not liked or touched peas. I would hold up on the medications. What are your water parameters (Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate)??? Also, make sure his eyes seem normal, no protruding scales etc. Her betta acted and looked normal - minus the fact he could not swim down.

Thanks for everyones help - palmbreeze is estactic that the betta is normal again. Whew......!!!!!!

(In case anyone wondered - I am palmbreezes fiance and she has become quite busy which is why I hijacked her responses).

Betta is ok! Yay! He is back to his normal self again! Thank you SO much MightyQueen! I think you were right. I just dumped the water in too fast for him. Whew! I was so worried!

Hi Folks, just an update, I never really figured out what was wrong with Zeus. I tryed various approaches and medications for the side floating thing. Since I last reported, he got worse then bloated toward the rearside and he looked like a peanut and couldn't even get to the bottom, not even down at all some days.

After exhausting everything I know how to do, I decided to treat for parasites. I used a combination Coppersafe and Sulfa changing water every week and this treatment every other week. After about two weeks, he seemed somewhat better. After 4 weeks he had periods that he could "get" upright and stay that way.

I am happy to say that for the last 3 weeks he appears to be happy and healthy.

Thank you all for your concern and ideas :fairy: Your support and everything is really neat. Thanks everyone.

For future reference, since Aries fish has recovered.....Good deducing Aries...Nice work !!

Glad for you too Rocky ! Sometimes the "aw heck, we'll give this treatment a try" works ! :D

Usually when betta float like that, the first thing I treat for is constipation/overfeeding...as that is the most often cause for that issue. Especially if you can't seem to find anything else wrong with it. Just hold off on feeding for a few days, try the cooked frozen/shelled pea...I have found that to work very well when the betta will eat it...sometimes they don't.

The issue that Roland was talking about is something that can happen when the betta is a fry. If betta fry are overfed...some believe that feeding bbs has a higher incident of this.....then thier swim bladders do not develope properly and they either will have this problem all the time, or are very prone to it if they eat too much at one sitting. Fry with this issue are called "belly scrapers" because they swim with thier tails dragging on the bottom of the tank. They should be culled, but sometimes they are missed (though I don't know how) When this is the reason for swim bladder issues in a betta, there is no cure...they can live well enough like that, but it sure is no fun as the owner to see them in that condition. Smaller more frequent feedings is about all you can do to help them...and keeping thier water very clean. How do you know this is the cause ? Well, if you have tried the treatment for constipation over and over and it doesn't help, if the betta seems to be healthy, is eating well and doesn't appear to have any other issues...than it could very well be that you have a belly scraper.

If the betta seems ill and is not eating, than the issue is more than constipation or an underdeveloped swim bladder.....and unless you know what it is, the best approach is to just keep the water VERY clean....putting it in a smaller container during this time is a good idea.

I usually put a sick betta in a walmart sized bowl and float them in a heated tank....changing the water in the bowl every day. I do this by having another bowl with clean water floating in the same tank, so the temp of the clean water is exactly the same. I carefully pour out most of the dirty water and then gently flip the fish into the clean bowl and then clean and refill the other and have it ready for the next day. I also will add aquarium salt because it discourages bacteria and helps with gill function. But some don't agree with this....either way, doesn't hurt anything.

Using meds on fish when you don't know what they have isn't a good idea. I have found that just making sure they are kept in very clean warmer water works wonders for most issues....especially when you don't know what the issue is.

Sorry this is so long, hope it helps someone out.....
