Betta With Fading Colors

Hello all!

Well, it seems that my betta, Broadway, is having some kind of problem. About three weeks ago, I noticed that his colors had almost completely faded--he was nearly gray in the body, and his fins and tail were pale. He was laying at the bottom of his tank, and his fins and tail were clamped.

My first attempt at fixing the problem was to change his water and set a mirror outside his tank for him to flare at. He didn't flare, but he stared at his reflection constantly and he began to un-clamp his fins and tail.

The next thing I did (which was as much for me as for Broadway) was to purchase a second betta, a female, and place her tank right next to his. There, he could see her, and he started to swim around again, looking much happier and much more active.

Finally, I upgraded him from a 1 gallon to a nice 2.5 gallon MiniBow with a lighted hood. Now he swims around, is very active, has his fins and tail open all the time, eats normally, and flares and shimmies at his neighbor.

The only problem is, he is still colorless. While he seems to be very happy, his water is clean, and everything else appears normal, his body is still gray and his fins and tail are still pale. I have no idea what else to do; do any of you have any suggestions?

Glad to hear he is doing better behavior-wise...a few questions...

What do you feed him?

What is his water temperature?

How often and how much do you change the water?

I feed him Hikari betta pellets every day. I'm not sure about the water temperature as I have not purchased a thermometer (I know, I should...), but it has been over 90 F outside every day lately, and pretty hot in the house, so I am sure his water is at a good temperature. (The female betta is perfectly fine, too, and her water is the same.)

I change the water twice a week.

Is your home air conditioned? If not, it could be that temperature fluctuations from day to night in the water are causing some extra stress which could be causing the color loss. Temperature is hard to control in smaller tanks anyway, on a hot day his tank could easily go from 70 to over 90 depending on room temperature. Such temperature changes in a short time are quite stressful for fish. It would be worth getting a cheap thermometer to rule this out as a problem. If you are getting crazy temperature swings I would recommend keeping the light off (adds extra heat) and getting a small fan to blow over the surface of the water to keep it cooler.

Thank you--it probably is the temperature, then. Could you tell me where I could find a cheap thermometer I could use for the tank? Does it have to be a certain kind?

I hope temperature is the only problem, but he seems to fine other than his colors.

ANy LFS has aquarium thermometers for pretty cheap. I got some at Petco for less than $2 each.
