I should be picking myself up a 37 gallon tank pretty soon, it's a perfect size to fit in my room. I want to get my Betta out of his bowl (almost a gallon) and into the larger tank.

I am hoping to get some live plants into the tank, though I really need to look farther into it.

I was wondering if the Betta would be alright with some Tetras (Neons maybe?), Corys, and/or a pleco (something smaller, bristlenose possibly).

be careful with nippy fish like the larger tetras but ith the smaller types its ok. as for cories and plecos no problem since they dont even occupy the same levels

You would be fine with neons, black neons, glo-lights, rummy nose, or cardinals. Get a school of a min of 5 and they will be safe from the the betta and they will be too busy with each other to nibble on his fins.

Make sure you get a nice school of cories, 6 or more! Your betta may try to bother the pleco, but don't worry, it'll put him in his place :)

I've had my betta with corries, plecos and ottos and he was fine. He bothered the cory when it was the only one in the tank, but not when there was more than 1.

I'm not sure about adding the cory/corys yet, I'm trying to get some good pictures of them and see if I like their looks.

I'm thinking of getting 2 schools of different types of tetras, or will they all school together?

Maybe like, 7 neon, 7 black neon.

I saw a black skirt tetra today that looked pretty good, maybe some of those.

Do you think I could get some guppies in there? The male ones with the fancy tails?

I'd be careful about adding fancy guppies to a tank with a betta. Some bettas like to be the only ones in a tank with long flowing fins-- depending on your guy's temperment, he may not take too kindly to the guppies, and may attack them. If I were you, I wouldn't really risk it, since I'd feel horrible if something happened to the guppies. >_<

I wouldn't put those in with a betta. Some people have had success, but I think the majority have not.

Guppies can harass and be nippy. I had a couple of male guppies and they killed one of my platies, a few neons, and another male guppy. They just nipped and nipped until they died. Bettas swim a lot slower than a platy and those lovely long fins are prime nipping targets.

Guppies seem like pretty violent little guys. Do you think I could substitute them for the Betta?

3 Male Guppies (or should I go 1 Male/2 Female? I don't want tons of guppies though)
5 Neon Tetra
5 Black Neon Tetra
3 Corries
1 Pleco

I don't see any immidiate problems with the setup, but I could be confusing information.

Sorry for not specifying, it will be a 37 gallon tank. Think I should stick with similar numbers to that? More? Less?

Guppies can do that?! O_O Holy crap, I had no idea! And here I was, worried about it being the other way around. :P
Some guppies can move quite fast when they are harassing other fish. I saw the two orange guppies I had play "tag team" with my white platy. One on each side. They'd take turn nipping him until they got him in a corner and then both would nip.

Now, bettas don't move fast and there's lots of betta to nip. IF the betta gets a hold of the guppy, yah, he could do some damage. But he's gotta catch them first.

One of the oranges got it from the Gold Gourami. I can't say that I was very sad to see him get what he dished out. The other one decided that the black male guppy was his next target. The black one was a lot smaller than him and he harassed him good.

I hate that stuff, but it happens.
