My new betta won't eat his pellet food. I even tried feeding him a live picnic ant (not even sure if thats a good thing to feed him) SO then I tried feeding him a flake or two of my goldfish flakes. Well lo and behold he gobbled them all up. So my question is this - if he eats the flake food so well, Should I buy him some tropical flake food? My local pet store doesn't carry any flake food specifically for bettas. Thanks for the advice ahead of time.

Some bettas can be right picky little boogers, huh?
If you can find those little tubes of flightless fruit flies, try those too...mine scarfs those down like popcorn!

Bettas sure are picky! Mine is just the opposite. He prefers the pellets and snubs the flakes. Whatever he wants he shall get...mean little critter

Mine used to only go for blood worms and nothing else. Starved him for 2 days before he would accept the betta bites and now he loves those. He still eats blood worms too but I think it took time for him to realize its food and he can eat it (betta bits)

Just keep in mind that bettas are carnavoirs. Make sure you don't get a veggy based flake food and you should be fine. My bettas get the Hikari betta bits and freeze dried blood worms for TREATS. They only get treats once or twice a week though. They do great on the Hikari stuff and they always go right for it.

Jinx bought some, I think it was top fin betta bits. Her bettas didn't like them and mine didn't either. So, not all betta bits are the same. You might want to try a few different kinds.

I feed mine BettaMin, which is a combo of small flakes and freeze-dried brine shrimp...they love it!

Let me warn you. I fed my Betta tropical fish pellets like all the other fish. Then I decided to get him Betta food made for Bettas. After all, I wanted him to be healthy and happy. So he ate his special Betta flakes, and then he was constipated! Then he was constipated with dropsy! Then the poor little guy died. Look at the ingredients in that stuff. It is like 12% fat! 2% fiber and 43% protein. So wonder he got constipated! So be careful and read the ingredients. My Betta's like the regular pellet food, I use New Life Spectrum for tropical fish.
