I was considering starting up my 10 gallon tank once again, and I was considering getting a betta. I have heard before that certain plastic plants can damage their fins, is this true? Also, I am considering using live plants, and wondering what plants the betta would like.

yes, hard plastic will tear their fins.

my betta loves exploring java moss.

Ok. is there any other fish I could put in there, or would a betta be better off alone.
depends. 35% of all bettas will kill anytihng else in the tank, but most will leave other tankmates alone.

This is a sometimes debated question.... My generic response is the betta should be alone. I have seen bettas living ok with other fish around the same size but it isnt something that I would recommend... If your going to try it, maybe a large gourami? I think you would definately have a problem with any smaller fish like most tetras.

One thing I recommend to people who like bettas but want a bigger tank is to put a tank divider in the middle and get one betta for each side. If you get a clear screen, they will see each other and flare up.

that is false. most bettas are fine with most other community fish. my betta has lived with tetras, rasboras, and platies fine. in fact, the platies bullied him.

Ok, I appreciate the help, I think I'll just stick with the Betta for now. Now I just have one more question (sorry). Would I be able to put a snail in with him, and if so what kind.
sure you can, and any apple/mystery snail should do fine (except for the giant kind.)
