Beware!!!

I know teelie, it really sucks... oh, yeah... after i was done setting up my girlfriend's new tank(it was a surprise :) ), i've noticed after filling it up with water, that it had a stronger smell of chlorine... i should have taken that as an OMEN... anyways, i will give her one of my devil after her tank finishes cycling... that is why i am very pressured in keeping them alive  ...

Tetrafreak I think you found what killed your biofilter + some of your fish. I am going to add a chlorine test kit to my arsenal as well now so I don't lose fish to something as arcane as this.

Hey, what the heck... i was just at pet kingdom not to long ago... i go there and also at fountains!!!

Well Howdy!

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that will ONLY trust those 2 LFS's in all of San Diego County!

You know what else he said, my water perimeters were a little off... the extra chlorine certainly killed some of the good bio colonies :mad2: i just wished that i have read a post like this before i did a water change... oh well

Hey i do trust them, they are one of the best in SD :thm: they also carries more selctions and offer more rare fishes too...

You treat it with PRIME? I haven't tried that, what is it anyways?

I'm always guilty of overdosing dechlorinator but now i'm using the right amount cuz i noticed it was getting expensive. Hehe theres a cheap way to test for chlorine. Mix ammonia in the water and if you feel queezy and you smell chlorine then its there lol! just dont uh really mix a lot or something cuz the chlorine gas will kill you

I hope that you are able to swiftly rectify the problem and avoid losing any of your fish.

This is one of the reasons that I never add water directly from the tap into my tanks; and I can't imagine why most people would do so.

Since I inject CO2, I test my tap water weekly for KH and pH values, so I just run the whole she-bang at the same time. I always get a 1.0 reading for ammonia.

The chlorine test I have is made by Red Sea. You can buy them singularily at Big Als http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=19503;category_id=3093 for 4.99$

I *always* test my tank(s) immediately after a water change. That way if there is something amiss I can catch it before it becomes a real problem and dose extra Prime if need be.

Holly,
Most of the dechlorinators have instructions on the back as to how much ammonia/chlorine/chloramine they can remove/bind per dosage. Since I use a Python and dose the entire tank anyhow, that's probably why I haven't had a problem. Just lucky.
