Well, today is a bad day for me... I lost the spotted striped pleco that i bought two days ago... so this morning, i went to the LFS where i bought it from and that is when he informed me about the city of San Diego's water... He said that on 22nd of december, the city added more chlorine than usual... this explained why the 3 F2 baby red devils that were in the same tank with the pleco are now scratching against the bottom(that i am still trying to save)... i think it happened right after i did a water change yesterday morning because unfortunately i didn't double dose the dechlorinator that i've put in the new water... so after i went to the LFS this morning, i went and bought myself a 5 gallon bucket so that i could treat and retreat the new water when i do water changes... Be careful guys!!! and wish me luck on the devils :hang:

That sucks that they did that. Did the LFS give you another fish then? Good Luck :thm:

Ach, that's terrible :(

Have you thought of buying a chlorine test and doing a regular test run (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH) + chlorine on your tap water before you change and immediately after a water change? That would alert you to any changes that take place and save you a lot of hassle with buckets and re-treating the water.

I've ordered an ammonia test kit that does not use the Kessler? method and therefore does not give false positive results with dechlorinators. I've had it with 1.+ ammonia readings in my tanks after a water change. Makes me nervous.

First of all, thank you guys for the replies!!!

Well, my LFS didn't give me no refunds nor a exchange whatsoever :rant2: which is fine with me, atleast i know what is wrong with my devil's... because i was going to treat them for ich and do a salt and high temp combo... i still added some salt though just to be on the safe side... it sucks i know... i just finished with my finals last week(HELL WEEK) so i didn't get to watch any news at all... this would have been helpful because my girlfriend told me that it was all over the news

Yeah, i should buy the test kits for chlorine... thanks for the suggestion... where did you get yours? How much are they? Are they readily available maybe at a LFS? Thanks a bunch!!! BTW, my devil's were from Jeff Rapps, that is why they are very special... i'm in san diego which costs me an arm and a leg on shipping... good stuff though :OT:

I did a quick check on them and they look alot better even though not 100% yet

Doesn't Amquel "instantly detoxify" water? I didn't know the amount of chlorine was relevant.

This is why I only use R/O or filtered tap water in my tanks. You never know when they'll dose the supply like that.

I guess the concentration of chlorine in the water determines the rate it will get dechlorinated... I think the regular dosage that was in the back of the bottle is the amount that you should use to treat regular water and not the one's that has a higher concentration of chlorine and toxins... this was the first time that i had a problem doing water changes... that is why i'm taking extra precautions starting today...

Maybe i'm just paranoid now, but after reading this i went outside and filled up a cup with water from my garden hose, and it seemed to have a stronger scent than what i remember.

I know teelie, it really sucks... oh, yeah... after i was done setting up my girlfriend's new tank(it was a surprise :) ), i've noticed after filling it up with water, that it had a stronger smell of chlorine... i should have taken that as an OMEN... anyways, i will give her one of my devil after her tank finishes cycling... that is why i am very pressured in keeping them alive  ...

WOW!

I guess that could explain issues with my tank water happening now.

I'm in San Diego County but I thought it was just the city water affected. I guess I need to check it out further now.

BTW...What LFS do you use here in San Diego? I use Fountains & pet Kingdom exclusively but always open to others if they're quality!
