I have a Senegal bichir that I'm trying to find a home for, he's a juvenile, about 4". Is it okay to keep him in my betta's tank which is ten gallons with plenty of cover (plant and plant pot and rock cave open on both sides) and he's fed daily all the shrimp pellets he wants?

My betta was previously keep with wild guppies and the Senegal was kept alone. I'd be able to supervise. I have them in the same tank right now with a divider and they're not showing any aggressive behavior but I'd like to remove the divider so I can turn my filter on w/o it being too strong on one side.

By the way, how do you pronounce bichir??

I highly doubt that a 4" bichir will eat a betta. They are however opportunistic and may take small guppies.

I also don't think a 4" senegal can eat a full grown betta. But they grow fairly quickly till they reach 7" where their growth starts to slow down. So you only have a short amount of time before it should be able to swallow it. There's a few different ways people pronounce the word bichir. In my area we pronounce it as "biker". I actually think it should be pronounced "bee-sheer" but no one would know what I'm talking about if I pronounce it that way.

the bichir will def eat the betta; sooner or later it will happen. you can't be too bummed if it does happen though. you're setting nature's way up!

:)

All you can do is try it but be prepared to seperate them. While a 4" bichir may not eat an adult betta it does have the potential to inflict some severe damage to it -Anne

@#$%! I'm tired of having so many tanks! And not even be able to have these animals share some. The crayfish needs one all to him self and so does the bichir. So do my piranhas and my betta can because he wears himself out until he learns to just deal with it.

It was my choice with the piranhas and the betta but... I know. I'm just complaining. I don't know how I always end up with people's animals they don't want.

Correct, although I usually just pronounce it 'Polypterus'. :D

I concur on the betta and bichir...even if the bichir could not quite fully swallow the betta, he would make a good go of it.

wait a sec here... bichirs can go with plenty of fish, just none that are big enough to get eaten. they grow fast, and you'd be surprised on what they can eat. what you can keep with him depends on what size of tank you have.
