They finally answered an email!
I placed an order with Big Al's and some of the items were out of stock (surprise! not!). With previous orders, there was a message to reorder the items. Not this time. So I emailed them asking if they changed their policy to duplicate other online sites that ship the out of stock item when it comes in free of s/h charges (Drs. Foster & Smith for example). No reply for a week. I finally called them and was told that yes, I would have to reorder the items. So the same night, I check my email and there is a confirmation that Big Als sent the back ordered items (well, 2 out of 3 anyway) without charging for S/H! Could there be a change happening? Hope so.

Oh, and I also received a confirmation from Drs. F&S for the ONE item they didn't have on my last order. Complete with detailed info on who it was shipped with, tracking #, and link to the site to track it.

We can only hope Big Al's will evolve to a higher standard. Can't blame 'em though, they are Canadians.:shake: :p ;) :D

I give a fins up to BigAlsOnline. I also fins up to Pet Warehouse, the Dr. Foster/Smith one. I also like Petsolutions (got a bunch of flourite there once).

My best buys were when that Petopia place went bankrupt--I caught the liquidation sales and came out well.

These 3 offer free catalogs too. Get them if you are interested in buying online, and they have some things you will never find at an average LFS. :)

I recently ordered fish from Live Aquaria (Dr. Foster & Smith) and was very impressed with the service. Ordered a pleco and a pair of German Blue Rams. They pleco was shipped immediately, I got an emial saying that the Rams where out of stock. The pleco arrived the next day. The day the pleco arrived, I got an email saying the Rams where in and where being shipped out, the next day the Rams arrived, with no additional S&H charges. All fish extremely healthy. They even have a 10 day guarantee on fish. They where very good with their customer service, responding to emails very promptly and the phone service was friendly and very knowledgable as well. I have had good experiences with Big Al's too, but never ordered anything that ended up out of stock, at least yet.

And here I thought you got the same surprise from Big Al's that I did!! Received an order last week with a free gift!!

I hate to tell you this, but 90% of all customer service you talk to out there for your "american" companies are canadians. However you talk to the big al's customer service in the states, which means you're trying to insult americans.

Hey !!'
I got a glass fish with a little Floaty ball so I could have him swim around in the tank. Would you like to make a trade. That's a good looking lobster:laugh:

Nice try cdawson. The company is in Canada and run by Canadians, and it's the service I was poking fun at. Besides, Americans (not including South Americans, only U.S.A.-ans) do enough to insult themselves that they don't need my help! ;)

Why do you think they have customer service handled by "Americans"?

There seemed to be an abnormal # of BigAls bashing threads that I added to simply questioning why they hadn't answered emails. Just wanted to afirm the positive...that's all.

the big al's online is supposedly handled regionally, so if you're in the states the american distribution center handles it, whereas in canada the canadian center handles it. Yes it's owned by canadians, but it's still environmentally friendly and hasn't really given into the pet superstore trend yet. ;)

However most of the american call centers for customer service in large companies are handled in canada (MCI, Verizon, all your satellitle services) so I wouldn't be suprised if indeed it was actually done up here.
