Well just sat down and on DiscoveryHD a show was on called "Targeting Terror". It showed some of the latest hi-tech stuff on anti terrorism. Well seems what there working on are monitors capable of identifying a person by an image of there face - even with different facial expressions. Try covering your face to avoid recognition - it alerts security. Theres also another program their working on to be able to recognize a person by their walk. Even if ones legs are mostly covered like with a long trench coat for example. Other forms of pattern recognition like identifying were all maintanence workers are around planes in an airport and recognizing if their following their normal patterns, fueling, loading cargo, etc.

I have finally given in that 'Big Brother' to some extent, is inevitable. At least in the U.S. it seems eventually they will be able to pretty much track each and every person.

Of course its to cut down on terrorism right? What a crock. If they have studied and captured ones 3d image and they way they walk why arent they already in custody? I have a hard time believing this will be solely for anti terrorism and if it would really have had any effect. What, does it erase the record if a 'normal' person is identified?

Two books for you to read. The first is "Oath of Fealty" by Larry Niven. Involves a police state owned by the citizens, where cameras, security guards, and constant observation is a comfort to the population because the uniformed force behind it all are employees of the citizens.

Second book is "Lacey and his friends" by David Drake. This one involves a society in which it is illegal to be in place where you are not under constant camera observation. Camera in your car, every room of your house covering every angle etc etc. Main charcter is a camera cop who craves privacy in a world where it does not exist. Very telling story.

So all the security in the world can be good or bad, depending on how good or bad the people in charge of it are. Kinda scary when you think about the nature of people attracted to passing security laws.

And finally, the imaging is'nt to identify terrorists. It's to identify everyone else, then find the person who does'nt fit. So it stores every "normal person" forever, and uses them to try to find the abnormal person. Kinda useless.

THat is scary! Speaking of Big Brother, we learned in my marketing class that soon stores will have a device that can detect if someone walking by has a PDA. If they do, the device will send advertisement/coupons for that store to the person's PDA.

Malefic23 - I actually have that David Drake book but havent ever read it - maybe I will sometime - if only I could find time to read books anymore. Seems like the last book I have ever read was probably a textbook in college lol.

Kind of reminds me of that movie, trying to remember, I think the one where Tom Cruise stars and the see the future to see killers before it happens - anyhow when someone walked by there would pop up holographic adds tailored to the individual. Thats just wonderful.

Another example of Big Brother at work... we just recently purchaced a D3ll pC and it asked.
What purpose will this PC be used for?
A) Nuclear Research
B) Biological Research
C) Chemical Research
D) Home use.

That's the short version but there were about 10 options to choose from. I thought it was funny.
