About a week ago I brought home a clown pleco. The next day I noticed some white spots all over it. I called one LFS and they told me to get Quick Cure and it'll be okay. I ended up getting Super Liquid Ick stuff (sorry can't remember the exact name). I put that in and nothing happened. My fiance ended up getting rid of the sick fish 3 days after I brought it home. On the fourth day, we noticed that the other fish got ich too. I then went to the store to get more treatments and got Jungle Ich Tablets. The box said it would cure ich in 24 hours. It also said to remove the carbo from the filter and if needed to add another dose after 24hours and a water change. It's now 3 doses later and the fish seem to be getting worse. What should I do?

Oh, I forgot to mention, I have mostly Tetras: Black Skirt (he's got it bad), Black Phantom (He's got it real bad), Serpae (doesn't have it at all), Congo (doesn't have it) and a Bala Shark who's got it bad.

Thanks, I'll have to pick up some salt. I was just trying to follow the directions exactly. It said you don't have to increase the temperature. I took out all our decorations and cleaned them b/c I thought the ick might still be in them. After I changed the water again last night I didn't put the meds in right away. Actually, I ended up falling asleep. I didn't want to stress them out anymore than they already were. So, this morning my fiance points out that I didn't put the meds in and I put them in before I left for work. I don't know what I'm going to do if they're still sick when I get home tonight.

Search for ich on this site--you'll find a multitude of threads covering the topic in depth, including explanations of what ich is, what it can and can't do, and how to prevent future infestations.

OrionGirl-Yeah, I've been searching. I didn't know how long it would really take for it to clear up. So far 2 fish have died. That sucks. Now the congo tetra seems to have a black lip and red at the base of his fins.

More than an ich problem

There are other diseases that look like ich. One of the more common mistakes (in my humble opinion) is that people believe they have to know exactly what is wrong, beyond doubt, before they take action. At least you took action. By doing so, you can learn what works and what does not.

I would suggest that you remove the traces of all other medications from your tank. Do that by filtering through fresh carbon on your filter. And changing part of the water. Don't worry about stressing the fish, because they're starting to die off and are already under stress. Change part of the water and filter through carbon. You want to avoid mixing medications. Then add a wider-spectrum medication that will cover a wider range of diseases just in case your diagnosis is a little off.

I would suggest Paragon. Use it as directed and it will not harm your biological filtration.
