once i open the bio spira do i have to put it something else to seal it or is it fine open?

You should be using it all once its opened. If air gets at it, the bacteria can die. But is there is a lot left over toss some into the filter. This will help produce bacteria in the filter fast.

i bought 3 oz...enough for 90g but only have a 10g and 2g....how long does it last unopened?

If you close it air tight and keep it in the refrigerator, 6 months at max.

Roll down the packet and paper clip. Then stick it into a ziplock bag. That should do it.

The bio spira does not go bad just because the package is opened. I would close it up if I could though just because the air might dry it up like it would anything else in your fridge not wrapped up. You don't have to use it all at once, and 6 months is how long it's recommended to keep it. I have some in my fridge 8 months old and wouldn't hesitate to use it. The bacteria is kept dormant by refrigeration, and probably starts to die off after the 6 month mark. I would not throw it away!
