Bio Wheel filters

I have a couple of Penguin 330s that came with a tank I bought, and I'd like to find out more about how they work. What does the wheel actually do? What are the two 'cage' sections at the back for - should they have sponges in them? Can anyone either explain this or direct me to a thread where I can get the full run-down on these filters, please?

The biowheels work well for the same reason wet/dry (or should I say wet/moist) filter do. Our bacteria LOVE highly oxygenated water. Since the entilre surface of the biowheel is almost constantly exposed to air, this results in the pefect environment for bacteria. the other compartments can be filled with sponge, filter fiber, charcoal, or whatever other media you feel you need. Personally, I would just cram a sponge wrapped in 100% polyester filter fiber (quilt batting from walmart) in there. rinse and reuse the sponge, replace the quilt batting.

Good idea...waaaaay cheaper then using Marineland's "cartridges"
