i was told at the pet store that if i added biospira to my tank that i could add fish immediately. i'm getting really bored of staring at an empty tank, my husband is getting impatient, and i cant find a filter from an established tank to float in my tank to speed up the cycling process. the filter my parents have on their outdoor pond is scary......there are actually earth worms living in it O.O and i dont know what other kinds of bugs and bacteria might be in it, so i decided to bypass that option, since i dont know anyone else with an established tank. its almost starting to sound like it would be worth the $12 to get some biospira to speed this thing up.
 
i just called petco and they have something called "Biozyme" which claims to be about the same thing. would this stuff work the same as the biospira?here's the description from the website

"Freshwater Biozyme is a living system of beneficial bacteria in concentrated form, which is activated upon introduction to water. It converts lethal ammonia and nitrite to less harmful nitrate. It quickly reduces fish waste to inert substances and breaks down organic buildup in gravel beds. Freshwater Biozyme has unlimited shelf life, as opposed to liquid enzymes. These bacteria contribute to the production of the nitrogen cycle which is critical to all aquatic systems. This material gives you the option of increasing the activity of an already established filter, or reactivating a filter damaged by medications. From what people have said in these forums biospira is the only one of the cycling products that has proven to work.
 
i just called petsmart and they said they would GIVE me cultured gravel from their tanks, the guy there said he does it all the time! i know gravel isn't AS good as biospira, or even getting an established filter to throw in there, but its better than nothing!
 
make sure he skims the gravel off the very top layer, that is where most of the bacteria live since the top gets the most oxygen.
