Black ghost knife fish

They are nearly blind and use a sonar like system to find food. I just learned that a week ago from my "live aquaria" periodical, and thought I'd share W you.

Yes they use an electromagnetic field to detect food. Their "eyes" are very sensitive to light though so they can hide if the light is turned on. It is quite interesting to watch these fish foriage because they will swim backwards with thier nose pointed at the substrate untill their electro sensor picks up something as they hover past it backwards and then they will swoop forwards to suck it up.

Another thing to watch out for if you get one is that they can be a bit sensitive to salt and very sensitive to medications (like ick medications).

Like the cory cats I suppose. I put in 1 tablespoon and a half aq. salt in 25 gallons, when my nitrites were up. But, all is well.

If I start up a new tank, I will make sure nitrites are 0 before I add the fishies.
I said "if". LOL.

Thanks for the tips. That black ghost knife is on my mind, however, I think I'm hooked line and sinker....hehehee

Good to hear. :) The black ghost knife is a very cool fish that will give you hours of entertainment.

My tank is finally starting to get better! Thanks for asking! After battling with the thing for weeks with first ich and then the resulting fungus infections I'm glad it's nearly over.

The salt, melafix and pimafix were not helping with fungus at all so I had to move up to tri sulfide tablets which had an immediate effect (3 days, but I call that immediate when talking about aquariums. ) I'll probably put one more does of tri sulfide tables in because one of the gourami is still showing visible signs of the fungus. All the others look perfectly clear now though.

Currently there are 8 survivors... 4x platy 1 1/2" long, 1x sunset gourami 1 1/2" long, 2x blue dwarf gouramis 1 1/2" long and 1x guppie 1" long.

Then I'll probably wait a couple of weeks and add another couple of fish. I'm thinking about a baby bristle nose pleco, some SAE or neon tetras, and maybe a pair of discus. I might just have to get a very young black ghost knife and move him up to a bigger tank when he gets a bit older. :) I'm not coping well without one.

Certainly have to save my $$$ for a bigger tank though.

I saw one snail, fished it out and haven't seen any since. Khulii loaches are cool too. None available in our fair city at the moment. Ya the black ghostie is so cool and my "must have" soooo I'm going to wait and save for my monster tank lol.

Glad your aqu. is going well now. I don't know wh :idea2: at I'd have done, I've only had mine for 2 months now and if I had your probs. I probably would have quit.

Yeah it almost made me give up at once stage there when it looked like all the conventional treatments were failing. But I remembered that I've had fish tanks my whole life and I snapped right out of it. Feeling much more up to the task now. :D

Kuhli loaches are cool to watch too. But I only had 2 and you hardly ever see them. Apparently when you have a bigger group they feel more comfy in playing out in the open.

I have 13 snails now I think.
