I just recently perchased a black ghost knife. I have a good hideout for it, but when it's inside you can't see it at all. Does anyone have any good ideas for decorations that would let it feel safe and concield, but also allow me to see it at it's inactive times.
low lighting levels, floating plants, suspended driftwood, and many plants all help to bring a BGK out into the open.
A secure environment does the same. What are the tankmates? If you have anything less than a 75 gallon tank you do not have enough room for a BGK. And, the 75 will provide too little space quickly.
The BGK grows to about 2' TL. It needs lots of space and lots of gallons.
how long have you had him? Mine took about a month before he came out any time besides lights out.
try a moon light. mine comes out and hunts his snails at any time of the clock now that he is comfortable. also mine is out with in 5 minutes of me putting in tubifex worms, which he will also eat out of my fingers.
you can put a drinking glass in there, slant a piece of acrylic in the front with some plants on the backside of the slant.
i named mine Elvis due to his black velvet look, is yours named?
is he an African or a South American?
I have had my bgk for only a couple of days. I expected it to stay hidden while it acclamates to a new home. This morning it was out and about but soon dissapeared shortly after lights on. I have him houses with a large pleco and one small angel. I had two but the other died last night. The angle that is left seems to be in good health still, but I am keeping a close eye on it. Any suggestions on precautionary messures to ensure the remaining angels survival.
I have my knife now close to a month, IT LOVES being out and about now, when we move I will have it in a 1,100 gal aquarium. but remember they are related to an electric eel and if they feel threatend they will send a mini shock, I've gotten a few when I tried catching it when I re did my tank
yeah, my neon tetra disappeared and a small rasbora I had. those I assume the knife ate. my Clown and Ghost will eat blood worm and anything it can stuff into it's mouth
mine loved freze dried tubifex worms and i breed snails in with my fancy tailed guppies. between the Clown Loach and the BKF i go through about 6-10 snails a week.
sorry to hear about your anglefish. iassume you checked all water chemistries? how long did you have the angels from the store?
Be very odd to feel a shock from a BGK. Maybe impossible.
The BGK is a “slightly electric” fish. Giving off, at most, 3 milivolts of charge. The electrical sensory system is required for navigation and hunting since the fish is nearly blind. When in seach of food the BGK will move forward in a head down posture, or swim backward in a reverse motion in a head up posture. This enables the active sensory area located dorsally to cover as much area as possible. With over 1400 sensors distributed across the body the BGK is able to discern the slightest changes in the electrical field surrounding him. As opposed to the short bursts emitted by an Elephant Nose the BGK emits electrical waves. Providing a more constant awareness of its surroundings.
While the visual acuity renders the BGK nearly blind do not forget photosensitivity. They will avoid light.
