I've been reading around and see that Black outs are used to help get rid of Hair Algae, if anyone has tried this can you post what you have done to get rid of it or the steps you took to remove it?

Thanks :)

I've had my tank going for about a month and a half now (pre-cycled) I have 2 DIY CO2's in there, don't really use any ferts right now, I have Excel Flourish, but that kills my vals.

This is what I did:

- 30% water change
- fed the usual food
- cover all sides to make sure it is completely blocked
- Turn lights off.

That's it. At the end of the 3rd day, I am going to see what it looks like.

i had a bad case of hair algae...i got some flourish excel and dosed 3x the normal amount, every bit of the algae was gone in a week....will melt anacharis and most vals

I'm also tempted to try Excel as well but I don't have any with me. 3x seems a lot though. Most people seem to use 2x max.

Currently I am still using Excel although it hurts my vals, it really only seems to kill the ends, not all the way to the stem (which is fine, the stem looks nice) but I have other plants that now have it so if its for the greater good I think it is worth it.

yhbae please let me know how your blackout goes, if it works out well I may have to do mine shortly! It's getting out of hand, slowly starting to grow a hairy mat too!

Yeah this is how it looked before blackout

I'm hoping I can remove these and by lowering total amount of light, I can control the growth rate better.

Its so ugly to look at. :(

Yeah, that's one of my huge dilemmas, is I have way too much light, right now I am running 2 DIY CO2's and I'm only using half of my light power (2x65w is full, I'm using 1x65w compact fluorescent) and I'm still getting tons of it, I'm at about half of what you are, but on almost all of my plants, and now starting on the gravel. Today I also ordered a 10lb Pressurized CO2 Tank, see it here Cost me about $220 not too bad.
