i'm a newbie to this forum so let me start out by saying hello. i've got a tank that i service that has this blackish rubbery sponge (i think its a sponge). its really tought to get off the rocks. i want to avoid buying new rock and pulling this out (its pretty rampant in this tank) of the tank due to costs. does anyone know what this is and if there is a critter that will graze on it?

Welcome!! :)

Angels and butterflies in general eat sponges and corals, but I don't know if they will eat your sponge b/c I don't know what kind of sponge you have.

This seems to be a question for Mogurnda. He is one of the resident experts on Marine Hitchhiker Inverts.

i do have one large copperbanded butterfly in the tank and he doesn't seem to pick at it. no other butterflies or angelfish in the tank however.

Can you get a pic? "Rubbery" doesn't sound like a sponge--most of them have a stiff, but flexible texture.

next time i go to the tank i'll take pics. i know it doesn't sound like a sponge but i can't figure out what else it would be and i swear it feels rubbery in your hands.
